A white seeded, (Yanninicum) type, with mid season maturity exhibiting high forage production with good levels of hard seed. Increased autumn and winter production over Trikkala. Riverina withstands waterlogging and has high levels of resistance to Phytophthora Root Rot, Scorch and Powdery Mildew.
Key attributes
- Increased early to mid winter production
- Higher hard seed content than Trikkala and Gosse
- Resistant to clover scorch race 1
- Lower formononetin than Trikkala
- Suited to early watering programs
- Tolerates some waterlogging
About this variety
Riverina is a subterranean clover of the yanninicum group, bred for waterlogging tolerant country and positioned between Trikkala and Gosse in maturity. At Perth it flowers at 119 days, against Trikkala at 112 and Gosse at 126.
Its advantages over both are specific. It produces more feed through early and mid winter than Gosse, which is the part of the season where a legume contributes most to carrying capacity. And it carries a higher hard seed content than either Trikkala or Gosse, which is the trait that determines whether a stand comes back after a cropping phase, since Trikkala in particular is soft seeded and regenerates poorly.
It also carries lower levels of the oestrogenic isoflavone formononetin than Trikkala, which matters where ewes are joined on clover-dominant pasture.
Riverina suits early watering programmes and tolerates some waterlogging, making it a good fit for irrigated country and heavier flats where a productive, reliably regenerating sub clover is wanted.
Disease & pest resistance
Resistant to Race 1 and at least moderately resistant to Race 2 clover scorch; lower formononetin than Trikkala; higher tolerance to leaf rust and leaf spot; more resistance to powdery mildew than Gosse
Stand life
Higher hard seed content than Trikkala and Gosse. The higher levels of hard seediness will increase the potential of increased production in the following years.
