Safeguard Diploid Annual Ryegrass

ARGT resistant ryegrass that cuts poisoning risk

In stockDownload tech sheet

ARGT resistant Hybrid ryegrass. Very early flowering with significantly more dry matter production than Wimmera. Suited to the Wheatbelt areas or where ARGT poisoning is a likely occurrence. Option for crop disease break for Take All and Cereal Cyst nematode. Safeguard is the only commercially available ARGT resistant ryegrass. Australian bred for Australian farming conditions.

Key attributes

  • ARGT nematode resistant
  • Reduces ARGT risk in the following year
  • Also resistant to cereal cyst nematode
  • Useful crop disease break
  • Increased winter production
  • Similar flowering time to Wimmera

About this variety

Safeguard was developed through a joint programme between the Meat Research Corporation and the South Australian Research and Development Institute to address annual ryegrass toxicity, and it represents a genuine break in a problem that had no good answer before it.

ARGT is caused by a bacterium carried into the seed head by a nematode, and Wimmera ryegrass is the usual host. Safeguard carries resistance to that nematode, and because it crosses with the background Wimmera population, the resistance is passed into the following year's progeny. The paddock therefore gets progressively safer rather than needing to be resown each season. It also lowers ARGT levels in oaten export hay, which protects a market as well as a flock.

Beyond toxicity, Safeguard resists cereal cyst nematode and shows tolerance to the wheat and oat strains of take-all, so it earns its place as a crop disease break in its own right. It flowers at a similar time to Wimmera, which is what allows the cross-pollination to happen, and it produces well through winter and spring for grazing, silage or later hay.

It suits drier cropping and livestock country affected by ARGT, where it is the only annual ryegrass Irwin Hunter will recommend for pasture regeneration.

Planting & grazing notes

Medium-term (2-3 year) management program; test strips; timed stock removal before seed head; rotational grazing. With the added benefit of very good winter and spring production for grazing, silage or later hay, Safeguard can offer a very good pasture option for farmers in those drier areas affected with ARGT.

Disease & pest resistance

ARGT (Annual Ryegrass Toxicity) resistant via nematode (Anguina funesta) resistance — the defining trait of this variety; also usable as a crop disease break for Take-all and Cereal Cyst Nematode. Safeguard pasture rotation ARGT nematode resistant annual ryegrass shows considerable promise in overcoming ARGT problems throughout the cropping and livestock areas where Wimmera ryegrass is a problem.

Stand life

Self-seeding annual — relies on heavy seed set in year 1 to persist across a 2-3 year ARGT management program

FAQs

How do I get on top of annual ryegrass toxicity on my wheatbelt farm?

We recommend Safeguard, the only commercially available ARGT-resistant ryegrass, as a biological control. It resists the seed-gall nematode that carries the toxic bacterium, so replacing susceptible ryegrass with Safeguard helps break the cycle. Run it as a 2-3 year program, and use only certified Safeguard seed, because non-certified seed is likely to be susceptible.

My sheep look fine, but could ARGT still be hurting production?

Yes. Research by UWA, CSIRO and Agriculture WA found sheep can be affected by ARGT for six months of the year with no visible signs, with wool volume down 22% and staple length down 10%. Sowing our Safeguard ARGT-resistant ryegrass helps reduce that hidden risk for sheep and younger or lighter cattle.

Export hay buyers are testing for ARGT, how can I lower the risk of rejection?

Growing Safeguard ARGT-resistant ryegrass reduces the risk of toxic ryegrass in your paddocks, lowering the chance of export hay rejection. Cutting for hay is also a recognised ARGT management option. Prepare the paddock the year before by running down ryegrass seed reserves, and sow only certified Safeguard seed.

What pasture can I use as a disease break before going back into wheat?

Safeguard ryegrass is promoted as a crop disease break option for take-all and cereal cyst nematode, while also controlling ARGT, which makes it a useful pasture phase in wheatbelt rotations. Talk to us about fitting it into your program, as grass weed and disease management need planning across several seasons.

How should I prepare a paddock before sowing an ARGT-resistant ryegrass?

Start the year before sowing Safeguard by cutting ryegrass seed reserves with herbicide, hay cutting or heavy grazing. In the sowing year, cultivate and spray emerging ryegrass seedlings, then sow. Leave a small unsown test strip so you can monitor background ryegrass, and aim for a heavy Safeguard seed set in year one.

How deep and how thick should I sow an ARGT-resistant ryegrass?

Sow Safeguard shallow or on the surface using harrows or a triple-disc seeder, and never sow it deep. The minimum rate is 8 kg/ha, with higher rates suited to better-rainfall areas. It performs on soils from light sand through to heavy, with a pH of about 5.0 or above.

When should I pull stock off a ryegrass paddock so it sets plenty of seed?

With Safeguard, remove stock from about early September, as it heads in early October and needs a heavy seed set to regenerate. Before then, graze rotationally, keeping it at around 10-15cm. Good seed set in year one is what lets Safeguard persist and crowd out susceptible ryegrass over a 2-3 year program.

What's a very early maturing ryegrass for a short wheatbelt season?

Safeguard is a very early maturing diploid bred out of Wimmera, so it heads and sets seed before the season finishes. It suits wheatbelt areas and light to heavy soils, tolerates mild salinity and delivers excellent winter yields with vigorous leafy growth. It also gives you ARGT resistance.

Safeguard vs Wimmera ryegrass, what's the difference?

Safeguard was bred out of Wimmera but carries resistance to the nematode that spreads annual ryegrass toxicity, which ordinary Wimmera lacks. Safeguard is also very early flowering and produces significantly more dry matter than Wimmera. If ARGT is a risk on your farm, choose Safeguard; otherwise Wimmera remains a traditional wheatbelt annual.

What rainfall does Safeguard ryegrass need?

Safeguard suits the wheatbelt and other lower-rainfall areas, from roughly the 350-400mm zone upward, and in higher-rainfall areas it can be sown at higher rates. Its very early maturity helps it set seed before the season finishes, which is critical for regeneration and ARGT control.
