SouWest contains proven varieties that have been selected and developed to perform in our unique Western Australian environment. It is suited to a wide range of farming systems, soil types and conditions, and where managed appropriately should also continue to provide high quality pasture into the following years.
Arrowleaf, Balansa, Crimson and Persian clovers provide a continuity of early and late feed, and the shorter season Dargo complements Abundant for earlier productivity.
Planting & grazing notes
Optimal sowing time is autumn to winter. Cultivate or spray out any existing pasture or persistent weeds immediately before planting, and prepare an optimal seed bed, applying lime or gypsum if required. Ensure you have adequate soil moisture with the possibility of follow up rain; if dry seeding for early production, make sure paddocks are clean of weeds and you have assessed the risk of a false break. Plant as shallow as possible with good seed to soil contact. Increased sowing rates and fertiliser will encourage interplant competition during establishment, offering earlier grazing and higher dry matter production. Once established, ensure plants are not prone to pulling, then graze to 8–10cm high to increase tiller density. Do not over graze. Apply a rotational grazing program through winter and spring, and cut mid spring for silage or late spring for hay.
Disease & pest resistance
Dunstan Perennial Ryegrass has strong rust resistance.
Stand life
Lock up and graze through winter and early spring, then allow the paddock to run to seed in spring in the first year. This provides the following years' regeneration, and if managed well and locked up annually to seed, SouWest should continue to provide high quality pasture into subsequent years.
