Component
PGOne50 Perennial Ryegrass
A new generation late heading Perennial Ryegrass bred from elite genetics from New Zealand and North-West Spain.
Tribute White Clover
Medium to large leaf type, summer active with high stolon density. PGOne50 Perennial Ryegrass is a late flowering type which delivers good feed quality through spring until early summer when it will then become reproductive, however this can be easily managed by grazing. PGOne50 Perennial Ryegrass is a late flowering type which delivers good feed quality through spring until early summer when it will then become reproductive, however this can be easily managed by grazing. PGOne50 Perennial Ryegrass has limited aftermath heading therefore the decline in feed quality is limited, retaining the attributes of high voluntary intake and cleaner grazing. To optimise production, introduce a rotational grazing system increasing or decreasing the rotation taking account of the seasonal conditions through the year.
Amass Diploid Ryegrass: Ideal for areas where periodic winter waterlogging occurs. Persistent under heavy grazing pressure with quality feed in spring / early summer. Mid-Late heading date. Hypa tetraploid perennial ryegrass: Bred out of 25% Italian and 75% Perennial. A Mid-Later maturing variety selected for high dry matter yields over late winter to mid Spring with improved persistence in drier conditions. Tolerance to rust and suitable for sheep beef and dairy.
Achieve Tetraploid Ryegrass: Good tillering and recovers well from grazing. Its upright growth habit prevents lodging during hay and silage production. Excellent rust resistance maintaining quality late in the season. Tolerance to waterlogging. Mid-late heading.
Hypa tetraploid hybrid perennial ryegrass: Bred out of 75% Perennial and 25% Italian. A Mid-Late maturing variety selected for high dry matter yields over late winter to mid Spring with good persistence and tolerance to rust.
Haifa White Clover: Small-medium sized leaves with high winter /early spring activity. Older variety with prolific seed set and some hard seed dispersed by livestock. Waterlogging and low PH tolerance. Irrigation Mix provides excellent production supported by good pasture management, appropriate nutrition, and irrigation to extend the production season. To optimise production, introduce a rotational grazing system, increasing or decreasing the rotation according to seasonal conditions. Recommended pH Rate: 5+ Recommended Rainfall Rate: 500mm+ Recommended Sow Rate: 25 to 30 kgs/ha.

*Occasionally some varieties in our mix will be replaced with a like-for-like variety where the original is not available or not easily accessible. Varieties in the mix will be specified on the bag label.

About this variety

The Irrigation Mix is an Irwin Hunter formulation for country where water is not the limiting factor, and where the objective is to convert that water into as much high quality feed as possible.

It combines ryegrasses with white clover. Under irrigation a ryegrass will produce heavily provided nutrition keeps up, and the white clover component supplies nitrogen to the grass while adding protein and palatability to the sward, which is why the two are almost always sown together in an irrigated pasture.

Irrigated pasture is an expensive asset, and getting the blend right matters more there than almost anywhere else. Sixty years of supplying irrigators across the state sits behind how this mix is put together.

It can be established from March onwards under an early watering programme, which brings the pasture into production sooner than a rainfall-dependent sowing would allow.

The mix produces strongly across the season and suits both grazing and fodder conservation, particularly in dairy systems where consistent quality feed through the year is the requirement.

Planting & grazing notes

FAQs

What pasture should I sow under a pivot for dairy cows?

We recommend our Irrigation Mix, which blends Amass and Achieve Italian ryegrasses with Hypa hybrid ryegrass and Haifa white clover. It gives excellent production for dairy and livestock enterprises needing extended seasonal feed under irrigation. It suits sandy to heavy soils with pH 5+.

How do I stop irrigated ryegrass going to seed head in late spring and summer?

We recommend managing grazing in late spring and summer to limit seed head development. For our Irrigation Mix, rotational grazing and grazing at 6 to 8cm increases tiller density and keeps the pasture leafy. Topping may also help where stock can't keep up. Leafy pasture holds its feed quality far better than pasture that has run to head.

What white clover handles wet, acidic soil under irrigation?

Haifa white clover is known for tolerance of waterlogging and low pH, and has small to medium leaves with high winter and early spring activity. It is the legume in our Irrigation Mix, where it fixes nitrogen and lifts feed quality alongside the ryegrasses. Haifa is also available on its own if you want to add it to an existing pasture.

What ryegrass holds up to heavy grazing and rust under irrigation?

Our Irrigation Mix includes Amass, which is persistent under heavy grazing, Achieve, which has excellent rust resistance late in the season, and Hypa, a hybrid selected for persistence and rust tolerance. Together they suit intensive irrigated grazing, and Haifa white clover adds nitrogen and feed quality to the sward.

How much seed do I need to sow an irrigated ryegrass and clover pasture?

For our Irrigation Mix we recommend 25 to 30 kg/ha. It suits sandy to heavy soils with pH 5+. Sow into a clean, well-prepared seedbed, and inoculate the white clover with the correct rhizobia so it fixes nitrogen. Keep the seed shallow, because white clover seed is very small.

Our paddock gets winter waterlogging but we irrigate over summer. What ryegrass suits?

Amass Italian ryegrass is ideal for periodic winter waterlogging and is a key part of our Irrigation Mix. Haifa white clover in the mix also tolerates waterlogging. Combined with Achieve and Hypa, the blend provides extended production under irrigation. Good drainage still helps, as prolonged flooding can set back any pasture.

What's a hybrid ryegrass and why would I want one in my pasture?

A hybrid ryegrass crosses Italian and perennial types to combine fast growth with persistence. Hypa, in our Irrigation Mix, is bred about 75% perennial and 25% Italian, is mid to late maturing, and has good persistence and rust tolerance. We also stock Hypa on its own.

Can I use Irrigation Mix without irrigation?

Irrigation Mix is designed for extended seasonal production under irrigation, but it can also suit high rainfall areas of 500mm+. Without summer water, the ryegrasses and white clover will slow or stop over summer. For dryland, we recommend SouWest Pasture Mix or IH Dairy Select Mix.

Irrigation Mix vs Western Annual Mix, which suits irrigated country?

Irrigation Mix is built for extended production under irrigation, combining Amass and Achieve ryegrasses with Hypa hybrid ryegrass and Haifa white clover. Western Annual Mix is an Abundant and Dargo annual ryegrass blend for dryland 450mm+ rainfall areas. If you have reliable summer water, Irrigation Mix is the better fit.

When does Irrigation Mix flower?

Irrigation Mix flowers at roughly August to November, with Amass, Achieve and Hypa being mid to late heading types. We recommend managing late spring and summer grazing to limit seed heads so the pasture stays leafy and high quality. Rotational grazing at 6 to 8cm also helps increase tiller density through the season.
