About this seed blend
Silahay is the big pasture producer and the ideal choice for farmers looking for a good value ryegrass and clover mix. It is perfectly suited for grazing, silage or hay, and will provide early establishment vigour and high quality bulk for silage and hay in the spring.
Silahay contains two of our top proven ryegrass varieties, Abundant and Dargo, and complementary Balansa and Persian clovers that have been selected to perform in WA across a wide range of farming systems and soil types. It responds well to fertiliser.
Silahay seed is great value as it is made up of almost equal proportions of diploid and tetraploid ryegrasses and uncoated clovers, which results in an increased number of seeds sown (approx. 25% more seed per 25 kg bag) compared to more traditional tetraploid ryegrass and coated clover seed mixtures sown at the same rate per hectare.
Planting & grazing notes
Optimal sowing time is autumn. For early production, dry seed prior to the break where paddocks are clean and you're comfortable with the risk. Ideally spray out any existing pasture or persistent weeds before planting, and prepare an optimal seed bed, applying lime or gypsum if required. Ensure adequate soil moisture with the possibility of follow up rain, and choose a sowing method that ensures good seed to soil contact. Increased sowing rates and fertiliser will encourage interplant competition during establishment, offering earlier grazing and higher dry matter production. Once established, ensure plants are not prone to pulling, then graze at 6–8cm high to increase the clover component, which will add quality to the silage or hay crop. Apply a rotational grazing program through winter and spring; fertiliser in spring will promote bulk growth. Cut mid spring for silage or late spring for hay.
Stand life
The ryegrasses are annual. Persian clover should provide some hard seed for the following years' regeneration.
