About this variety
MaxiMix is an Irwin Hunter pasture blend put together to do what its name suggests: get the most out of a paddock across the whole season rather than producing a single flush.
It combines complementary proven varieties, chosen so that their strengths cover each other. A mix built this way is more forgiving than a single variety sown alone, because different components come away under different conditions, and a season that suits one part of the blend will usually carry the pasture even where another part struggles.
That principle is what sixty years in the seed business teaches. Formulating a mix is a matter of knowing which varieties actually complement one another in local conditions, not simply combining good ones.
MaxiMix is broadly adapted across soil types and produces strongly for both grazing and fodder conservation, with reliable establishment.
It suits growers who want a dependable, high producing pasture without designing the blend themselves, and it can be grazed or shut up for silage or hay depending on how the season develops.
Planting & grazing notes
Optimal sowing time Autumn; spray out existing pasture/persistent weeds and prepare seed bed before sowing (apply lime/gypsum if required); recommended sowing rate 25-35 kg/ha in soils of pH 5+; graze at approximately 20-25cm down to 40-50% to increase tiller density (do not overgraze); rotational grazing through winter and spring; cut mid spring for silage, late spring for hay, or lock up through winter/early spring and allow to run to seed for regeneration; Inoculant C is used on the clovers (per the Undated draft template tech sheet). Finer leaf tetraploid producing high quality grazing and hay options.
Disease & pest resistance
Strong establishment and excellent rust resistance. Finefeed Diploid: Finefeed is a fast-establishing, fine-leafed diploid ryegrass with improved rust resistance and excellent feed quality. Well suited to shorter growing seasons and a wide range of Western Australian soil and climate conditions, it also offers high leaf rust tolerance.
Stand life
It adapts well to loam and gravelly soils, is commonly used in cover crop and regenerative pasture mixes, and provides added benefits of deep rooting, high seed production, and nitrogen fixation. Regeneration is reduced if cut late for silage or hay.
